Sitting is NEW SMOKING!

And WHY MOVEMENT Matters in Today's Workplace

Your workday may keep you at your desk for hours. But your body was designed to move.

Emails. Meetings. Deadlines. Spreadsheets. Coding. Designing. Editing. Gaming.

For many of us, a typical workday means spending hours in front of a screen with barely any movement in between.

We've become so used to sitting that it feels normal.

But here's the thing: normal doesn't always mean healthy.

The phrase “sitting is the new smoking” is often used to highlight the growing concern around prolonged sedentary behaviour. While sitting isn't literally equivalent to smoking, spending too much time inactive has been associated with several health risks.

And that's why movement matters.

The Problem With Sitting for Too Long:

Sitting itself isn't the enemy. The bigger concern is spending long, uninterrupted periods in the same position.

When your workday keeps you seated for hours, it can contribute to:

- Muscle stiffness and discomfort

- Back and neck strain

- Reduced physical activity

- Fatigue and low energy

- An increasingly sedentary lifestyle

And it isn't only office professionals.

Content creators spend hours editing. Gamers spend long sessions at their setups. Developers and designers can lose track of time in front of their screens.

Different work. Same problem: too much time without enough movement.

Why Movement Matters at Work:

Your body isn't designed to stay in one position all day.

Small changes throughout your workday can make a difference. Standing up, walking around, stretching, or simply changing your working position can help break up long periods of inactivity.

Movement can also help you feel more energised and engaged throughout the day.

The goal isn't to stand all day either.

It's about giving your body the freedom to move.

Your Workspace Should Move With You!

This is where ergonomics becomes more than just having a comfortable chair or the right desk height.

A movement-friendly workspace allows you to change positions throughout your day.

A height-adjustable movement desk, for example, allows you to alternate between sitting and standing while you work. Instead of being locked into one position, you have the flexibility to adapt your workspace to your needs.

Think of it as:

Sit → Stand → Move → Repeat.

It's a simple idea, but it can change how you experience your workday.

Simple Ways to Add More Movement to Your Workday

You don't need to completely change your routine overnight.

Start small:

🚶 Take movement breaks

Stand up, stretch, or take a short walk between tasks.

📞 Stand during calls

If the meeting doesn't require you to sit, use it as an opportunity to stand and move.

🧍 Change your working position

Alternate between sitting and standing when possible.

🚶 Try walking meetings

For suitable calls, take the conversation on the move.

🖥️ Make your workspace adjustable

Set your desk and monitor at comfortable heights and create a setup that allows you to change positions.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is to move more than you did yesterday.
